Pictures from Filming

Both Yasmin and I worked on how we could place the props in an effective way. I feel the way the props are used in conjunction with the dolls house really works as it shows disproportional which we wanted to carry on throughout the film which other props like the small and big teddies and the large dice.

Here is what I looked like for filming Yasmin did a really good job as it helped me get into character and reflected on the characters personality. Using dark make up instead of light make up which is typical of dolls made the character look different and troubled.

We used juxta positions in different scenes to create different emotions. For example I decided to make this prop to show that every aspect of the "girls" life is disjointed which she is unable to comprehend. Yasmin thought it would be a good idea to put it on the sofa this showed the juxta position between something that is homely and considered safe, secure with the head which shows the confusion of the girl.

The Dolls house

Here are a few shots of the dolls house which we will be including in our film.
This Dolls house will be the main prop we will be using.

We will be using all aspects of the dolls house and focusing on different parts during the film.

New filming location

Yasmin and I have decided to film inside school now instead as we will be able to control the lighting better. We are also able to use a white screen which will create a blank canvas for us when it came to filming.  It is also more convenient for us to film in the school as we will not be facing time constraints nor have to travel.

Inspiration

As Yasmin is now doing my make up we decided to look at different pictures which we could take inspiration from, I began looking at the costume so I know what to wear on the day.

I started researching Japanese Harajuku girls as their fashion is very surreal and often doll like.
Below are some images of Harajuku girls.

I chose this image as I feel it is very doll like, the girl is dressed quite playfully as you would if you were a child playing dress up. She  is dressed very brightly and would contrast between our scenes and her dress. I also think it links back to being doll like as it looks as if someone has picked her clothes for her.  From this I can start to see what I want to look like and how I can achieve this. I will be wearing a long top, tutu, knee length socks and a rabbit hat. I will also try to add things to the costume such as necklaces, bracelets and rings.

Yasmin has been looking at different images which she can take inspiration from, she has now decided what make up i will be wearing and will be testing this out on me on tomorrow so we know how everything looks.

Props

Below are pictures of props which I have created

I wanted the Dolls to look as if they had been experimented on and abused. I looked at some of Hans Bellmars work then tried to see how his work could link into mine. I realised that I could cut off limbs and reattach them to parts to create the same effect. I first began to look at how I could use the material of the dolls to my advantage and what I could do with the material. I realised that the material was easy to draw on, I started to experiment with different colours to see what colour would create a "bruised" effect.

On this particular doll I wanted it to look like it had been beaten so the ribs, collar bone and eye been badly bruised. I then looked at what else i could do to the doll to make it more life like. I decided that i would make it look like it had been held captive because if this I tied her arms together and added bruising around the wrists to make it look like it had been tied together for a long time. I also cut off the dolls leg and attached an arm to the socket this linked back to Hans Bellmar.

The material of the doll allowed me cut into the body without it breaking I used this to my advantage and created cuts on different parts of the body.
I also started writing on the doll as if I were trying to call them that, I also tied a rope to the dolls neck to make it look like she had been hung.

I cut off some of the dolls hair I decided to keep the hair and use it as a prop. This will look good next to one of the experiments as it will be clear that "girl" has done this and suggests that it was only just done.

Here are the Props which I have bought.

When It came to dressing the barn I wanted the props to be an eclectic taste, I decided to look at different things and see how I could use these to make the scene look disjointed.
I chose this prop head as I think it looks very sinister as you can't see any features.
I was inspired by Alice In Wonderlands Mad Hatter Tea Party, I thought that these dice would really work as they are quite playful and childlike but is going to be put in a sinister room which creates a juxtaposition.

I liked these tea cups and teapot as again they are very playful compared to the room and other things in the room. i.e the Dolls.

I wanted to incooperate this bunny hat into the film as i felt it was something quite quirky i decided that the "girl" will be wearing it.

I also added bits which wouldn't necessarily be put in the scene to add surrealism

Research into Behaviours

As I was going to be acting in the short film I decided to research into the normal characteristics of a girl who is disturbed.
I began by looking into serial killers and the normal traits these people have. I found that serial killers often have something which connects each murder to the next, for example a serial killer will use a specific weapon or technique when killing all victims.  I started to consider how I could incorporate this into my character I decided that I would experiment with all my victims. I will make sure that each experiment connects with one another in some way if it be writing or ropes tied around the experiments.

I found that there are three groups of serial killers which are prepared, unprepared and mixed. I wanted my character to be prepared as I want the "murders" to be methodical and logical. Being a prepared serial killer will mean that I have a high IQ and will be very imaginative with my experiments.

I began looking at why people turn into serial killers, many serial killers will have high IQ's but will have been neglected as a child. Children who had been neglected as children were more likely to use their IQ to plot elaborate killings.

Storyboard

Below is the storyboard which Yasmin created, she has put the storyboard into an animatic so we could see how the shots were going to look before we started to shoot the film.

New Shooting Script

Below I have created a shooting script as there is no dialogue.

Medium close up of the girls feet walking down a muddy secluded path. Cross cuts between medium close up and long shot of her walking down the hill. Cuts to medium close up of her feet walking in the long grass. Fragmentation shots of her hand touching different plants.
Sounds of birds and the wind blowing
Underlying tones of high pitched distorted noises
Close up of dolls in the water
Long shot of her walking into the barn
Cuts to a medium long shot in the barn looking at the girl walking into the barn
medium close up of her sitting down
snap shots of everything in the barn
close up of her "playing" with her experiments
cross cutting between her and objects in the barn
medium long shot of her sitting down to "tea"
snap shots of her different toys/ experiments having tea

Hidden

Although we have changed the story to our film we are still going to use the title Hidden. I think the title still links to our story as the girl  is Hidden from society where no one can see her or judge her. I also think it links back to the fact that the girl wants to remain hidden as she likes to be by herself. I wanted the title to link to society today the title shows what can be hidden in today's society that a person doesn't know what could be happening behind closed doors.

Rough Footage

Here is some rough footage that Yasmin and I filmed.

New Storyboard

Synopsis

Hidden is about a young girl who isn't apart of normal society, she lives in a barn where she carries out experiments on different children's toys. The barn is in the middle of nowhere surrounded by fields and overgrown woods, she enjoys living here as she doesn't like to be seen by anyone. The girl finds solace in some of her experimentation's and will often have tea and dinner with them however she also "murders" or "hurts" some of her experimentation's.  The camera follows her to show a day in her life.

Changes to the Film

Looking back at our original footage Yasmin and I both realised the content was to complex and in turn made our film have less of an impact.  We both felt that the footage looked rushed and didn't show our full potentional, we also felt that we could dress the barn alot better. Yasmin and I both looked at other short films  to get some inspiration on how to dress our film to make it a more convincing piece of realism.
After watching the short film we decided to brainstorm new ideas for the film which would make it more simplistic and in turn make it have more of an impact.  We decided that we should only have one charcter the "killer", we decided this as we were finding it hard to get all the actors together where we wouldn't have any time restraints we also wanted the focus of the film to be on the surrealism rather than the story. We  decided that we would use pictures to make the film more disjointed and have more suspense. We have decided to make the Killer a girl so that I could act in it. This is so we know when the actor will be available and again make the filming more time sufficient because of this Yasmin will be Filming and Directing while I Edit and add Sound.

Surrealism

Surrealism was developed in the 20th century, it is a style of art and literature which stresses the non-rational significance of imagery or the subconscious use of imagery. This is portrayed by the involuntary action of chance-effects and  unexpected juxtapositions.
Surrealism aims to show what can be relived in dreams where the mind is free of conscious and  conventions.  Surrealism came from Dada,  dadaists would create obscene art as they didn't like the society they were living in.
There are two broad types of surrealism, the early work by artists such as Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte and the later performed by such artists as Max Ernst and Joan Miro.
The Surrealist movement was founded in Paris in 1924 by Andre Breton. He began a Surrealist Manifesto in which the aim was to reveal the unconscious and reconcile with rational life.
Through the years Surrealism has been aimed at social and political revolutions.

Here are some different surrealistic artwork by Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst and Joan Miro.

Changes to Characters and Script

Once we got to the location we realisd that certain aspects of our script would change this was because Yasmin and I both had more ideas once at the location where we could see what would work better.

Make Up

Yasmin's sister Leah Stageman is currently studying a degree in make up becuase of this we thought she would be the perfect to the make up for our film. We began by looking at her portfolio to see whether her work would fit in with our genre. Working with Leah Stageman will give our work a real professional edge and in turn help our film look like we had a higher budget. Below are pictures of Leahs work:

We feel that Leahs work would really tie in well with our film, as you can see the work is very surreal as most people wouldn't wear this on a day to day basis.
