I have decided to look at horror and a little experimental for my genre. I have mainly looked at short films which involve the classic horror character. I.E clowns, puppets, etc...
Here is the first short film I looked at called "The Visitor" by a man called Brett Simmons

First thing we see is the production company's logo which is called Stroyteller Production. The writing is in yellow and the picture is what looks like a dead/limp puppet. We then start to hear the sound of a music box, which is a classic technique used in horror films to create a sense of suspense and eeriness. We then see the opening titles which are in a classic type writer font. Undertones of violins are heard which creates the sense of danger to the audience. The title "The visitor" appears and zooms into the screen through one of the letters we see the first character who appears to be the protagonist the change from the title to the scene is very fluid. A young boy is sitting upside down on a settee, we now can hear a haunting laugh which is soon to be confirmed to be from the television. Cross cuts are used on the same image to make it disjointed and more suspense filled even though the image isn't changing. The laugh is now more pronounced. The suspense has been built up but is suddenly washed out when we hear what seems to be his father telling him to go to the kitchen. The tone in the dads voice suggests he his in trouble. It then cuts to the kitchen where the young boy, mother and father are sitting talking we hear that the boy has been cheating from his friend which suggests he is rebellious. Some humour is introduced when the young boy says : " i'm 12 and half which means i'm practically an adult" I think this humour is used as a clever juxtaposition between light-hearted fun and the horror which he will soon face. The doorbell rings we see a man who, in just his appearance, manages to become the antagonist. He begins to tell the man to buy home security almost mocking the father as we the audience already know that something is now going to happen because he doesn't have home security. The young boy walks past the door and catches the antagonists eye as this happens we hear a low tone of music which again creates a sense of danger. We then see a birds eye view shot of the young boy playing with a ball there has been an elipsis of time. Commments of the young boy being scared in a humorous way is again mocking the horror which is about to happen. The doorbell is once again rung although we can't see who it is we can see his silhouette through the window which is colourful and bright straight away we know it's a clown. We see the antagonist peering through the window and telling the young boy how much he knows about him, the fact we can't see the antagonist properly makes the scene more menacing. We start to hear the undertones of the music box again. The music starts to coincide with the actions of the clown.
