The Killing Joke

The second of the short films I have decided to look at is the Killing Joke made by Sebastian Lopez.

The first thing we see is an abandoned warehouse this is teamed with the sound of a train. The film is grainy and desaturated this gives the film an old vintage feeling, it also makes the scene look more rundown. We then see the small package with the red balloon, the red balloon has been altered to look more red which gives it an animated look, it also shows the audience that is important and key to the scene. Cross cutting is used to show how isolated the streets are, a woman slowly appears dressed in red the same as the balloon suggesting some sort of connection between the two. The woman draws closer to the package, she opens it up and we see a clown pop up, it's obvious that it is a jack in the box. We then see in the back of the shot a car, it then cuts to a point of view shot of someone in a car he starts to pull up next to the woman. We can tell that the woman is the protagonist and the person in the car is the antagonist. Although we can't see the antagonist we know its a man as we see a hand that is very masucline, being that it is a man we now start to feel a sense of danger and intimidation.  A medium shot is used of the Jack in the Box as the car is driving past this again shows a connection between the two.  As the woman gets to her car the other car drives off giving a sense of safety, however we see the woman is still apprehensive and the music confirms that with high pitched tones used. There is cross cutting between close ups of the womans face, side shots and point of view shots this again create a sense of apprehention.  we once again see a point of view shot this time it is of the woman looking in the back mirror the car with the antagonist in has appeared again and is following her. The antagonist is in a highway patrol car which gives off a sense of authority, this is used in a menacing way.  We again see what appears to be the antagonist leaving, the womans car then breaks down, us as the audience, know that something is now going to happen.
